Why Your Hardwood Floor Might Be Suffering From Distortion What You Need to Know
Distortion in hardwood floors are more common than you might think and definitely more frustrating than they should be.
Most people assume that once hardwood is installed, it will stay flat and flawless forever. But wood is a natural, living material that reacts to its environment. When moisture or temperature swings get out of balance your floor can start to cup, crown, or buckle, all signs of warping.
Here are the main reasons warping happens and what you can do about it:
- Moisture imbalance. Hardwood reacts to changes in moisture in the air and in the subfloor beneath it. Too much moisture makes wood expand unevenly. Too little causes it to shrink. Both extremes lead to cupping or crowning due to lack of space needed for the flooring to go.
- Poor acclimation and installation. If your floor was not properly acclimated before installation or if the boards were nailed or glued incorrectly, distortion is more likely to occur. It is critical the wood gets time to acclimate and condition to your expected in use range prior to installation. Look out for our future video on this!
- Environmental factors. Basements, crawlspaces, and homes near water sources or in humid climates need extra care. Without proper moisture control, floors in these areas are more vulnerable to distortion and damage over time.
- Lack of humidity control. The easiest way to protect your hardwood floor is to maintain steady indoor humidity, ideally between 30 and 50 percent for solid wood floors. Using humidifiers or dehumidifiers as needed can make a big difference in preventing distortion.
Distorted floors not only look bad but can cause finish cracks, loose boards, and even tripping hazards. If you notice raised edges or uneven boards it is time to call a professional.
